Exploring the Izu Peninsula Without a Car
Is it possible to explore the Izu Peninsula without a car?
Yes, but it depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
If your goal is to visit a few major destinations such as Ito, Shimoda, Shuzenji, or Jogasaki Coast, Japan’s trains and buses can get you there. Many visitors enjoy a relaxing trip using public transportation and never need to drive.
However, having a car is much more efficient. Izu is a large rural peninsula with mountains, winding roads, small villages, waterfalls, fishing ports, and scenic coastal viewpoints scattered across a wide area. Many of the places that visitors remember most are located away from train stations and can be difficult to combine into a single day using public transportation alone.
What can you easily visit without a car?
The following destinations can be reached by train:
- Ito
- Izu-Kogen
- Jogasaki Coast (with a 3K walk)
- Kawazu
- Shimoda
- Atami
- Shuzenji
You’ll find beautiful scenery, hot springs, restaurants, museums, and walking trails within reach of public transportation in these places.
Exploring Rural Izu
The challenge is when you want to visit places away from train stops.
For example, you might want to:
- Visit a wasabi farm
- Walk to a waterfall
- Explore a traditional village
- Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant
- Visit a scenic coastal viewpoint
These places might be only a short drive apart, but to see them by bus requires multiple transfers and long waiting times. Unfortunately, you wind up spending more time waiting for infrequent buses than enjoying the places you came to see.
Should You Rent a Car?
Renting a car provides flexibility and allows allows you to discover many of Izu’s hidden gems (if you know where to find them).
For visitors who are comfortable driving in Japan, a rental car can be an excellent option.
On the other hand, I’ve heard many guests say that they prefer not to drive on unfamiliar roads, would rather enjoy the scenery, or simply want someone local to help them understand the history, culture, geology, and traditions of the region.
Hiring a Local Guide
For travelers who want to explore beyond the train line without renting a car, a full-day guided tour can be a practical alternative.
Because transportation, logistics, and local knowledge are combined into a single experience, guests can spend their day enjoying the peninsula rather than navigating schedules and transfers.
Many of my guests tell me that one guided day helps them understand the peninsula far better than several days spent independently.
However you choose to get around (public transportation, a rental car, or a guided experience), the best way to experience the Izu Peninsula is to slow down and take time to feel its unique vibe.
